Artist Statement
As an artist living in the city of San Francisco, I am inspired daily by the views and the characteristic architecture in San Francisco. Since every day I see the cityscape from various vantage points, in different lighting and weather conditions, I strive to capture in my paintings my uniquely personal perspective of the moods and pulse of the city.
In my recent series of paintings, I emphasize the geometric shapes of urban landscapes, and use traditional techniques with contemporary layout. The cityscape reflected in my paintings focuses on the more compositional elements by using flat shapes, colors and light on a narrower scope, rather than vast city views. I express my work in more simplified shapes than in reality. Moving car and active figures cannot be seen in this body of work, as a quiet and lonesome atmosphere is created throughout the entire painting.
Subtle changes in color temperature, saturation, value contrast, and level of transparency on each plane are important factors in my work. I intuitively determine the balance of color, value, and composition to create an overall mood. By using a dominant color with an accent color instead of the local color, I lead the movement of the viewer’s eyes for each painting, keeping rhythm and harmony throughout the composition.
